An announcement

So. Some exciting news, though for some reason I seem to be having trouble figuring out a way to announce it.

Basically, I went ahead and got myself a book deal! And a real live, not-imaginary book deal, at that. It's with Villard, an imprint of Random House, and I'm still not even sure how to contain my disbelief and excitement over this.

Here's what happened: After the AP story came out in January, I got approached by a few literary agents and started seriously considering whether or not I wanted to write a book. To be honest, I wasn't sure. After meeting with some people and stressing myself out about it, I decided to go ahead with it. I chose an agent and began writing. That was two months ago, and I haven't been able to stop ever since.

When I felt I had enough pages to show, I put together a book proposal which was sent out to publishers last week. Villard offered me a deal and I gladly accepted it.

Needless to say, I'm fucking thrilled.

I want to thank you all for reading and responding so positively to this blog. Many of your comments and emails are what gave me the confidence to actually go ahead with this. Who ever thought I'd go from cab driver to "blogger" to soon-to-be-published author in just a year and a half? I still can't quite believe it myself.

Anyway, I plan to continue driving the cab and doing the blog, so if you keep reading, I'll keep writing.

Hey- yours was the first blog I ever read after starting up my own!. Congrats on the book deal! When I first read the blog I was suprised by its quality, especially the photography. You really seem to capture the realism of NY.

Good luck in your new career as a writer :)

Whoa! Great news. I always liked to read your blog, but it is quite a challenge right now)) - white text on black background. Now I'm very excited about the opportunity of getting something written by you in the usual black on white!

Congratulations!

I've been reading your blog since I saw it in the news. I keep hoping to get into your cab one day, and even told a french female cab driver about your column, who didn't know about it or even that there was another female cab driver. Anyway, you have a dry sense of humor and are a great representation of our city! Keep it up and I can't wait for the book. Gina

I'm so thrilled for you! I can't get enough of your blog. And now a whole book is coming! I can't wait. (Oh, the pressure you must be feeling... I am so jealous and at the same time relieved not to have that kind of burden, even if it is a cool one.) That was my aside from the dark side of my personality. Seriously, congratulations!

Well, I'm another selfishly disappointed newbie jealous of all the people who got to check in with you daily.

How about a few lines once in a while describing what it's like to write your first book?

P.S. What happens if YOU fart in the cab?

Best of luck...

I've just back-tracked through your blog and found out about your deal, and I'm thrilled skinny for you. I lurked in blog land for a couple of months before I got my own journal started just a few days' ago, and yours is the one that has inspired me the most. I just hope that I get to read your book over here in the UK.

Don't let them kick the edges off of you, and don't - whatever you do - leave us all behind!!

Congratulations! The book deal is every blogger's coup de gras? What is a coup de gras? Maybe I mean raison d'etre. Did I spell that right?

congrats on the book deal .. i like the immediacy of your writing style

This is great! Congrats.

Will it be a memoir, fiction, or something else? I love to read travel memoirs, and can see this being similar in style since you're basically traveling all of the time for work and meeting interesting people, as the authors of travel books do.
